Raipur, In an unexpected move that caught many in the state bureaucracy and political corridors off-guard, the Chhattisgarh government on Monday granted a three-month extension to Chief Secretary Amitabh Jain (IAS:1989:CG) on the very day he was set to retire.<\/p>\n
The decision was finalised during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, shortly after the Union Government gave its nod to the state\u2019s proposal for service extension. By late afternoon, formal orders were issued allowing Jain to continue as the administrative head of the state till September 30, 2025.<\/p>\n
What added to the dramatic turn of events was the ceremonial mood earlier in the day. Jain, who has held the top post in the state since December 1, 2020, had visited Governor Ramesh Bais for what appeared to be a farewell call, signaling his departure from office. However, as the day progressed, signals from the Centre turned the tide, and the extension was formally announced.<\/p>\n
Senior bureaucratic sources indicate that the extension was necessitated by the state\u2019s indecision over appointing a new Chief Secretary. Three senior IAS officers-Subrat Sahoo (1992 batch), Amit Agrawal (1993 batch), and Manoj Pingua (1994 batch)-were being considered for elevation, but consensus had not been reached.<\/p>\n
This makes Amitabh Jain the first Chief Secretary in the state to be given a formal extension beyond superannuation-a move being viewed both as an endorsement of his administrative stability and a stopgap arrangement amid transition uncertainty.<\/p>\n
Jain\u2019s tenure as Chief Secretary began on December 1, 2020, succeeding Rajendra Prasad Mandal (IAS:1987:CG), and he has since steered the state machinery through a period of pandemic recovery, economic transition, and two changes of political leadership. With the latest order, he is now slated to remain at the helm for another three months-unless fresh orders dictate otherwise.<\/p>\n
